The Pacific
Madrona, Arbutus menziesii, grows generally along the Pacific
Coast from the Coronado Islands to southwestern British Columbia.
The bark of this tree fascinates me because of the constrasting
green and red colors. The paper-thin red bark peels as the tree
grows, revealing a light green underneath. As the tree matures,
the bark becomes thicker. This detail picture was taken in November,
2004, while visiting my friends Yvonne and Tom in Seattle, WA. The
deformations on the trunk lend themselves to some very fanciful
faces. |
