The Western
Yellow Pine, or the Jeffrey Pine, Pinus
jeffreyi, grows on dry mountain slopes of the Sierra
Nevada Mountains. The snags are often long standing, and true to
their name, the wood of these trees are richly colored. This snag
was located in the Golden
Trout Wilderness, south of Mount Whitney. This detail picture
was taken in early July, 1996, while I was on a backpacking trip.
The blue color comes from the weathered white wood picking up reflected
blue light in the shadows. |
