Algae on Sandstone 1 - USE CODE "CNAB19" FOR ORDERING
|
Most people
who hike to the Subway in Zion
National Park do it soley to see this.
The trail is 4.5 miles one way up the Left Fork of North Creek.
Once you descend into the canyon, and start hiking upstream, the
canyon walls slowly grow higher and closer. Near the keyhole that
is the Subway, the stream flows over red sandstone. It is here that
I found this next series of photos of algal growths in the running
water. The red sanstone and green algae provided wonderful color
contrast, which was further enhanced by the lighter, yellow sand
that was trapped within the algal mats. I hiked this trail in March
2004, with significant amount of snowmelt making sure my feet were
plenty chilly! |
