The badlands of northwestern New Mexico are part of a greater region called the Painted Desert that also includes much of northeastern Arizona. This formation in the middle of a wash intrigue me enough that I got up at 4:30 on a cold November morning, and hike a mile and a half to catch what I call Duck Rock in the first rays of the day's light.
