The badlands of Northwestern New Mexico are part of a greater region called the painted Desert that also includes much of northeastern Arizona. The extreme differences in hardness in the geologic layers result in differing rates of erosion. Slow erosion of the harder sandstone results in cap rocks on the tops of pillars.
